YAMAGATA – Yamagata forged cutlery
It is said that Yamagata City’s traditional craftwork Uchihamono, or hammer-forged cutting blades, originated from armor and farming implements made by forgers in 1356 as ordered by Shiba Kaneyori. In that year, the warlord stepped in the region where he later built the first castle in today’s Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture, and used it as the political base to rule the land. Uchihamono products, made in line with the tradition of swordsmithing, include sickles, hoes, scissors, kitchen knives, and machetes, a lineup reflecting Yamagata’s characteristics as a prosperous agricultural region. Up until today, these products have been used widely by farmers, gardeners, and horticulturists as well as at home.
The video presents one of Yamagata’s Uchihamono products, scissors. They are used habitually not only in Japan but also around the world, including Britain where gardening culture is established.
A traditional technique handed down from generation to generation, hammer forging is a way of hammering metal meticulously to draw strength and viscosity from it. The exquisite handwork of artisans by which blades are attached to each other gives them sharpness.
